Coarse sieve making: a coarse sieve is a tool to separate wheat seeds from straw and hay. A kind of coarse sieve was used for sifting flour. For the fabrication of a coarse sieve, the skin leather of ewe was stretched on a flat ground or on the roof and the artisan would nail it down on the ground and he would leave it to be dried. Then the artisan would shave the skin by a blade, cut the leather roundly, make it like a strip, form it like a ball and would hold it in water in order to have the leather is softened. He would spin it and nail it around a round circular mould called ‘âmm’ which is the frame of the coarse sieve. Then the strings are woven vertically and horizontally. A coarse sieve maker was an expert in making some kind of musical instruments like drums and tambourine ‘arabuna’ as well. He would make a kind of orchestral drum called ‘tonbak’ for which the same know how and process has been used. That, the case, in order to have it completely flat and strong, the skin leather was stretched on the frame by the assistance of a second person. The leather would cover on the frame. Then the artisan would add a special adhesive around the frame.
Brick Burning: for burning bricks in traditional ways and methods, the artisan would use kilns which were in two different kinds in Meibod.
1- Manual Kilns: there was a cavity like the water pool of water storage with a diameter of 7 meters which was not plastered. Over the cavity, usually a dome was built by mud bricks under which a canal was provided for the transfer of heat to the kiln. The channel was filled with lime stone. Workers would put mud bricks on it in a conic form. There were hole provided for exhaustion of the smoke in a distance of two meters one from the other. In order to avoid to go away the heat, a mixture was made by cow and sheep shit, charcoal powder and carpentry retails and some kerosene oil called ’puka’. The puka was a cement to fill up the cleavages and seams that were around and in between the bricks. Then the kiln was fired. By heating, the bricks were burnt and the mile stone were changed to lime. The mud raw bricks were also changed to brunt bricks. The capacity of a kiln depended to the expansion of the job which was at the minimum 20-30 thousand bricks.
2- qomi kiln: the kiln was formed by several wells in depth of 4-6 meters. The main well or the mother well was in the middle and the rest were around in a radius of 4-5 meters. All the wells were dug out some how that all were connected to each other by an underground tunnel. The mother (main) well was like a tower under the ground for which some people would construct a ceiling over. When putting the raw bricks in kiln, some space was provided in a fixed interval in between the bricks the exhaust of the smoke which was called ‘muri’. The number or muris would reach to at least 30. The fire would run through the muris and the smoke would rise and exit from the exhaust
